Music Artist Spotlight – 02/16

Gnarls Barkley

In a sea of dark and brooding rock music and shitty pop, there comes a beacon of light in the form of Gnarls Barkley. The incredibly talented duo of Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse bring smiling faces and upbeat music to those who need some sunshine to wash away the clouds. Their first album, St. Elsewhere, was a landmark debut for the duo. Bordering on Motown, the group mixes the funky beats and guitar of, well, funk, with the soulful preaching of Cee-Lo to bring you the good word of happiness. Occasionally the group takes a turn for the dark but usually the mood is brought back up by their incredible sense of humor (a song about monsters ends with a reference to oral sex). The group is also known for their incredibly nerdy antics.

The group is known for their explosive live shows, featuring the group dressed up in a set of costumes ranging from Darth Vader and a set of Imperial Stormtroopers to the entire Navy. It is an impressive sight and their presence on stage is unmistakably powerful. You’d be hard pressed to not be uplifted by the experience. In addition, the group is active in the cause to help Darfur and use the popular social bookmarking site Digg to gather awareness. The group also shows a great appreciation for it’s fans, upon signing up for the fanclub (free of charge) they give you access to their store with a 20% discount on your purchase.

Gnarls Barkley has a new album coming out in April, titled “The Odd Couple”. A track has been leaked called “Run” and can be found anywhere on the internet if you look hard enough. From the sounds of the track, April will the day Soul makes it’s return with Gnarls at it’s side.
